to flash or not to flash

ocf_off_camera_flash_outdoors_indianapolis_photography

To flash or not to flash? That’s a question that never has a clear answer. Yesterday we were preparing to photograph the family formals in front of the requested place, a pond that was in front of the ceremony site. There was only one direction to shoot this scene, which is the direction shown. We...

wedding tips // why you should book your photographer ASAP

There are always certain seasons of the year that couples book their weddings the most. Of course, they are usually centered around the holidays and summer. One of the most important pieces of advice that I can give a couple is to book their wedding photographer ASAP. If the couple wants to use engagement session...

the small things // wedding day photographer tips n tricks

weddingneeds2

I have been cleaning and remodeling the studio and the house, and I came across my little stack of wedding necessities that I had taken out of my bag for the off season and thought that I would share. I carry my Michelle Moore bag (mine is the Libby Bag) and I always always always...

diy // fun crafts for photographer’s props

DIY (do it yourself) – I’m a huge fan of it! As a child that had very little and I had to be really creative. All of my friends had these huge fancy barbie doll houses – you remember, the cool pink ones with the gold elevator! I would take my folders and tape and...

the 35mm lens // why it rocks // tips+tricks for photographers

Emails come my way often and the main question that I’m asked is “what is your favorite lens” or “if you could only choose one lens, which one would it be.” That’s a hard, yet easy question to answer. I only shoot with prime lenses and I use four. They are all Canon and consist...

Thanks for sharing :) I have my eye set on a 85mm 1.4 but in the meantime was looking into a 35 or 50 to spend a lot less lol I think I’ll grab a 35 ASAP! I think primes will make me work harder, and I’m always up for a challenge

Cathy - September 15, 2011 - 1:52 pm

Agreed! The 35 1.4 is my absolute fave lens too. So sharp and just about as wide as you can go without much distortion. My husband and I fight over it, so I think it’s about time to get a second one. ;)

the power of sliders // how to get those blue skies blue // tips + tricks

I’m fairly confident that most photographers are processing at least some of their files in Lightroom or Aperture, for the most part. I personally use Lightroom 3 but I also use CS4 as well. Well, a lot of photographers that are starting out and some that have been around are learning their way around LR...

what i love // tips+tricks

The first time that I saw them I laughed, out loud, in the store.  I pondered the idea of a 12 hour day outside during a heat wave with no relief, then I grabbed a handful of them.  As tacky as they are, and as cheap as they are – I thought – what would...

pink label inc // spring magazine 2011

We FINALLY named the new studio (it felt weird just calling it by my name then adding photography at the end of it) – the Pink Label studio and the business is registered under Pink Label Inc. – Yay! So to start us off, we’ve produced our first magazine for our clients for spring 2011!...

This post is for wedding and portrait photographers and families of brides and grooms to be. What can this do for you? guest speaker at the south bend PUG

It was a tremendous honor to have been asked to be a guest speaker by Katie Whitcomb at a PUG in South Bend, Indiana.  For those of you don’t know what a PUG is, it’s Pictage User Groups (PUGs) that are local groups of professional photographers helping other professional photographers.  Everyone was extraordinarily nice and I...

Thank you for coming and sharing your story with us! It was great meeting you!

Monica Brazier - September 11, 2010 - 6:35 pm

Hi Angel. Thanks for coming to South Bend last week. You really provided some great information! I wanted to apologize for leaving early, I had to pick up my kids. I also want to try and redeem myself if it looked like I was tired! I am in the early stages of pregnancy and I am ALWAYS tired… so I apologize! I purchased the Gary Fong light dome based on your reccomendation because I have a real problem with shadows in my pictures. Do you feel this product really helps? Can you email me also and just let me know during which part of the wedding do you use the dome? Thanks again for your time and information.

Angel Canary - September 12, 2010 - 7:18 pm

Oh Monica, you are fine! I know some people moved around after the break so I didn’t really notice. ;)
I use it during the formals. ;)

the off clip on – i'm a fan

I thought I would quickly share with all of my photographer friends and everyone my new love – the Off brand Clip On.  It’s a mosquito repellent, that you simply can clip on (no spray.)  I bought four of these and I have been clipping them onto my shootsac and my clients clip them onto them (or...

Dixie Dobbins - July 3, 2010 - 3:32 pm

Hi Angel! Its me Dixie from Texas! I so appreciate you posting this, I am covered in bites, and I found these in our Walmart this morning. Thank you! Also some advice. Dont wear dark colors! They are attracted to black and navy, etc. Wear White helps too! The only thing is each insert only lasts 12 hours and you have to buy new ones, but hey, they work! Love your photography and your blog, You are awesome. happy 4th of July!

so that's why I have more than one camera……

This weekend was filled with every emotion humanly possible, but mostly joy.  I learned to appreciate my TomTom while driving for hours on country dirt and gravel roads in another state (my poor little Eclipse) because if I didn’t have it, I’d still be driving in circles {thank you Ohio, for NOT posting detour signs, it...

lightroom magic + 2 presets created by me

I am a HUGE fan of Lightroom. As a matter of fact, Lightroom is the only reason that I am able to give my clients tons of edited photos, in a timely manner. Don’t get me wrong, I love CS4, but I don’t edit all of my photos with it, just the ones I really...

So glad I saw this pop up on facebook tonight. I love the way these presets look!

Krissy - May 23, 2010 - 8:45 pm

These are really great Angel! I may just have to add them to my preset collections!

Angel Canary - May 23, 2010 - 9:02 pm

Thank you ;) Don’t forget to tweak them if you shoot differently, then save a copy and rename it. I’m sure that’s easier than just shooting just like me and my sooc exposures ;)

JasmineStar - May 24, 2010 - 10:41 am

Lookin’ GOOD, Angel!!! ;)

Martins Kikulis Photography - May 25, 2010 - 6:26 am

One thing to consider.. How the preset works on each photo quite much depends on what equipment you use. For example, preset made for Canon cameras won’t work too well by default for photos shot with Nikon cameras.. I noticed that when I migrated from Canon to Nikon.

if you’re happy and you know it = show it

You remember the song, “if you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands” and then as a child, wearing a smile, you would clap your hands with enthusiasm along with the song, clap clap?  Well the lyrics to that song is what was stuck in my head all day yesterday as I pondered how...
