Here are just a few that caught my eye while downloading tonight, but I’ll have a full post soon.

Starting off with my favorite!

Stephanie is a pin-up artist and this just resonates with the pin-up look.

This is so them – so much fun!

Here’s how it works. I you book your 2011 or 2012 wedding with us (for the dates we have left open) within the next 12 weeks we will put your name in for the drawing. ONE of the lucky couples that books with us will be drawn and they will have a $0 balance! That means they will get their package for FREE. So the value is from $2800-8400 depending on the package that is booked. Because we travel to destination weddings as well, the only exclusion is that if the couple that wins has a wedding outside of the state, that the wedding package is still free, but they still have to pay for the travel fees (which is still a great deal.)

So here’s an example:Suzy Jones books with us for the Lovely package for $3400 for her wedding for July the 30th, 2011 with us on Sept. the 12th, 2010. Her name will go into the pool of all of the other couples that have booked with us over the 12 week period. We have a drawing, and let’s say it’s Suzy Jone’s name that’s drawn. Suzy Jones will receive her wedding photography package she booked us with, for free. Easy right?

So why am I doing this? Well, I like to give back and it makes me feel good!

To make it fair to all of the blog readers that will spread the word, if the couple puts your name down that you referred her to us when they book with us, if they win, you will receive a free session with all of the photos on the disc with a copyright release. See, it’s a win win.

Kara & Justen opted for the first look – so we had extra time to take photos before the ceremony. This was great because it was a 60% chance of rain that day and although it passed up downtown Indianapolis, I was happy to get these photos “just in case” it rained later.

The ceremony was at the Indiana State House. It was classy and elegant – I loved it.

Two of the kindest people in the world – I’m so happy for them!

The wedding reception was at the Skyline Club in Downtown Indianapolis and it was spectacular. The cake was provided by Heavenly Sweets and the DJ was Jeremy, from DJ Direct.

The view was absolutely amazing!

Speaking of change, I am changing as a person over the past few years (we all do) and I’m am finally going to fight my fear of public speaking. The ever so lovely Katie Whitcomb invited me to be a guest speaker for a mini-seminar for a fabulous group of photographers in South Bend. If you know me, you know I’m very insecure with my looks and mostly, my southern accent. I don’t mean a draw either, I mean, literally in the south they pronounce half of the english vocabulary wrong, or so it seems. For ten years I have been learning how to correct a lifetime of wrongs with my vocabulary and speech. I’ve already booked Leah Handlon to do my hair and makeup so I know that will ease my confidence and my nerves (a little.) Anyways, I am honored, and very excited to be their guest.

And because a post is boring without a picture, here’s one with off camera flash that I fell in love with tonight.

Okay, I am going to stop with those last two, so you’ll have to come back to see the other half of their engagement session!

I was never a fan of making a kid say “cheese” just to show their teeth in a photograph.  I wanted to find a way that, even if the child isn’t “really” smiling, it at least looks like they are.  What do I make them say?  PIZZA!  The kids seem to love this word and some smile just at the thought of pizza – I mean really, who doesn’t like pizza?!?  Also, since it ends with the “A” it automatically makes the lips curve up with they say it. 

I’ve always been the analytical type, dissecting everything and asking why and how.   For once, I think this thought process really paid off for me, because it works.  Try it! 

Here’s little two year old Gage saying “PIZZA!” It looks like he’s smiling, but he’s simply saying it.

DJ’s
Please communicate with the photographer(s.) If you plan to do the garter toss in 2 songs, just find the photographer – or better yet – just announce, “okay in about five minutes (or in a few songs) we’ll be doing the garter toss.” The perk for you is that everyone is happy, all of the guests will have been informed and back and ready to participate and the bride will have great photographs of you doing your job right. What you might not know – photographers use a variety of lenses and flashes and very often have different off camera lighting set up for various events throughout the reception. Our flashes will only fire “so many” times – in a row. If you announce it or inform your photographer, you will give them time to set up the proper tools that they would need in order to do their job. Another factor is that we have bladders too. Ha! The worst thing in the world you could do is start an event when the photographer is in the restroom. I, myself, always tell the DJ and the bride and groom when I am leaving the floor for “anything” but much to my surprise, the DJ will start the event irregardless.

So here are some random things (not just all from my thoughts) that photographers have to say about DJ’s that they won’t say to their face.

1. “WHY won’t they just give me a five minute heads up.” It’s not asking a lot, really.
2. It’s not cool to get family members or coordinators to ask ever 5 minutes when photos will be finished. If we said 30 minutes, it’s still going to be 30 minutes. You suck the creativity out of the photographer, and you stress the bride and groom out AND yes, it shows in the photos.
3. Why do they always give us that mean and dirty look when the couple comes in late for the reception? – This is sooooo common – you have to realize that photographers are on the bride and groom’s schedule. If they ran behind before the ceremony, and it cut out 30 minutes of photo time of important photos, it’s not the photographer’s fault. We are just doing our job. Photographers know that their family and friends love them and would gladly wait an extra 30 minutes for them, than for them to have no photographs of them as a couple. It’s their day.
4. If the bride and groom tell you not to play a song – don’t, especially the chicken dance.
5. When it’s time to cut the cake, or when he’s taking off the garter, yes, you need to play music.
6. “I will never refer that guy.” <<<< This is so common, you have NO idea. If you don’t cooperate with the photographer, they won’t refer you.
7. Don’t burp in the mic. (Yes, more than 4 DJ’s have done this.)
8. Don’t cuss unless there are no children there.
9. Be kind, share the space on or under your booth/table for photographer’s bags – it’ll mean more than you might think. Brownie points, offer it.
10. Don’t get drunk and slam them down at your booth. It’s not pretty. It might make your job more fun, but it makes you look unprofessional.
11. Don’t hit on all of the bridesmaids. And by hit on, I mean try to take them home. This is pretty common.
12. Last, but not least, during the bouquet or garter toss, always ask the photographer if they are ready. Sometimes we have to make our way through waves of people that have been drinking.

We photograph a circle of friends and we hear what they have to say, but won’t tell you.

Before you egg or roll my car and house – I’m not writing this as a “slam” against DJ’s. We’ve worked with a TON of perfect fabulous DJ’s. Over the last few years we have been working with a lot of new DJ’s that are just getting into the wedding business. They simply just don’t know. This is meant to help the relationship between the DJ and the photographer. Feel free to leave a comment if you’re a DJ on what us photographers could do to make your job easier for you and photographers – feel free to leave additional comments.

We were rained out of their first session, and although most of the land was flooded, we managed to find a few dry spots and make some amazing photographs.

When I arrived at the salon and met Ashley’s bridal party, I knew it was going to be a great day!

Ashley started to read the card from her husband to be and immediately started to tear up. She looked over to her girls and told them to make her laugh so she wouldn’t cry and ruin her makeup. Chris drew a little picture that he used to draw to her when they were dating (since they were kids!) of a house, with them and kids and even a dog. I love it!!

Chris, you clean up pretty nice. OMG, can you believe the cuteness of the ring bearer and flower girl? I can’t take it!

Just try not to smile….just try

I know, I know I’m a tease, but there are so many more to come, I promise.

On to the joy!  Chris and Ashley were married!!  Their family had to be the most thoughtful family we’ve ever worked with – EVER!  I’ll have a full post and photos up in a few days, but right now I still need to unpack and put my feet up and enjoy this beautiful day.  I hope you had a great weekend!
