the small things // wedding day photographer tips n tricks

I have been cleaning and remodeling the studio and the house, and I came across my little stack of wedding necessities that I had taken out of my bag for the off season and thought that I would share. I carry my Michelle Moore bag (mine is the Libby Bag) and I always always always make sure that I have a few little key items to get me through a few bumps on the wedding day.

1. A very small umbrella. I keep this in the corner of my bag in the back and when I use the Shootsac during shooting, I keep it in the back of the bag. There is nothing worse than being blocks away and having a pop up shower. I have had to pull it out, a lot.

2. A lighter. I cannot tell you how many times, despite requests, the centerpiece candles are not lit when I need to photograph the items. As a wedding photographer, you are on a very tight timeline and it really helps in a bind to be able to light the candle, take the photos, then blow the candle back out.

3. A small sewing kit. I actually have a few, but this one is from a hotel that I kept. I know that the wedding planners usually have the bride covered, but what about you? I have had a few surprise rips and tears before that I’ve had to sew in a bathroom stall.;)

4. A tiny flash light. This has been a life saver for me when you are in a very dark reception and you don’t want to attract attention. I have had to look for things on the floor, etc. and it doesn’t put off a ton of light, just enough to see what you are looking for. In a tight tight pinch, you can also use it to shine on the subject when it’s pitch black to help grab the auto focus. It’s the size of a pen and it’s not very bright.

5. A handkerchief or small wipe. We all do it, it’s only natural – we sweat. There is nothing worse than having sweat drip off of your forehead. I like to keep something to dab myself if needed (which in the summer is a lot.)

6. A pill container. This has saved saved saved me so many times. Wedding photographers don’t get the luxury of calling in sick! I keep ibuprofen, tylenol, excedrin migraine, pepto bismol tablets, imodium, zofran and dayquill. If anything was to come my way, I am prepared.

Here is a small photo that I took with my iphone. Yes, I’m a professional photographer that just took a photo for a blog post with her cell phone haha! Did I mention that I’ve been remodeling?? All of my cameras are packed away for the week! So sorry for the craptastic image, but you get the idea.;)

If this helps just one person, it was worth to time to post it!
